TTT Day 2 ~ Tsukiji, Ginza and Odaiba

Day two of my Tokyo Trip! We visted Tsukiji, Ginza and Odaiba. Tsukiji is known for it’s famous fish market which is also the biggest food market in the world! They have these fish auctions that take place there but you have to be there before 5:30am to see the action. That turned out to be a little bit too early for us, but we managed to get there around 6am and there was lots of things to see still.

Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo
This is the type of traffic you see at the fish market, people transporting goods all around the market with their trollies. It may not look like it, but it’s pretty dangerous crossing here! It’s like crossing a highway, we almost got ran over by a trolly many times.. they don’t care to stop for you..

50% Tuna
I honestly did not know tuna grew this big until I went here.. I’ve only seen tuna come in cans or on top of my sushi before this! It was a very educational experience for me hahah

Tsukiji Market
Can anyone name the type of fish on the right there.. they kind of look like blowfish (?) but I have no idea.. Leave a comment if you know what it is! I am curious.

Huge Scallops
The scallops were ginormous.

Cold Tuna
More tuna!

Good for Beer
I laughed and read “Good for Beer” out loud to my friends and the man heard me and excaimed “Yea, good for beer!!!” and tried to sell me some of that stuff haha

We walked around a bit more, saw the area where they sold vegetables and such. They also sold a bunch of kitchen tools there, things like knives, cutting boards, etc. We had our breakfast at the fish market. The freshest sushi any of us have ever tasted in our life! The fish was so fresh that it had no fishy taste at all. It was such a delicious and filling breakfast, we were so excited that we forgot to take a photo of our wonderful meal. Sorry!

Sony Aquarium in Ginza
After the fish market and our breakfast, we walked over to Ginza since it was right beside Tsukiji! Ginza is known for being a very luxurious shopping district with many upscale fashion stores like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, etc. We weren’t planning on buying anything expensive there, but it was walk around and see everything. This is a fish aquarium that was on one of the street corners, made possible by Sony.

Sony Aquarium Ginza Street Corner
When we got to Ginza, none of the shops were open yet because it was too early! We had lot’s of time to kill so we just sort of walked around aimlessly until stores opened..

Ginza i
The main road ‘Chuo Dori’ is closed off to traffic on weekends so shoppers are free to walk on the streets.

Big Apple Store
The Apple store there. It had 7 floors!

Odaiba Station
Our feet were pretty tired once we were finished with Ginza so we rested up at the hotel for a little bit and then headed to Odaiba! Odaiba is located in Tokyo’s bay area and is a man made island. It is a popular shopping and entertainment district.

Odaiba

Odaiba Rainbow Bridge
In this photo is the Rainbow Bridge (although it did not look very colourful.. hmm) and their Statue of Liberty replica.

Sega Joypolis
We visited the indoor themepark, Sega Joypolis. Inside there was tons of arcade games and they had some rides there too!

Mameshiba Game
Look at all those Mameshibas! It was 100 yen to play this game and I won one of the little purple ‘red bean’ ones on my second try! Except I put it in the side pocket of my bag and it fell out sometime during that evening =(!

If you don’t know what Mameshiba is, watch the video below. They have created a bunch of short animations that are played as commercials on TV. The commercial isn’t really selling a product though, it’s selling the character. Pretty clever marketing! Each of the commercials has a Mameshiba character given some poor innocent person a random trivial fact that causes that person to lose their appetite. The commercials are quite hilarious and very cute!

Drum Game
Playing some crazy drum game! They chose to play a Super Mario song which went through all the songs that are featured in the game, it looked pretty tough!

Rainbow Bridge
Here is a better shot of the Rainbow Bridge! This is the view from Joypolis and it’s where we sat and ate dinner. I like the rainbow boat!

Dinner at Joypolis
Our dinner! Look at the plate on the right, it has like 5 french fries on it lol. Claire is clapping her hands in delight at the sight of our food! haha I’m just kidding, I think she was just santizing her hands..

Hello Kitty Themed Ferris Wheel Hello Kitty's Bow
After Joypolis, we trekked over to Palette town to ride the big ferris wheel! It turns out it was all Hello Kitty themed! This ferris wheel was once the tallest in the world, but has been surpassed by big wheels like the London Eye and the Singapore Flyer.

Palette Town
The view from the ferris wheel!

After riding the ferris wheel we called it a night and headed drowsily back to our hotel. We were pooped from a long day (we were out since 6am!!) and so hot and sticky from the temperature/humidity. We weren’t totally used to the weather there yet. It was quite a fun day though! Coming up for next post, Shibuya and Harajuku!
